Are You Paying Too Much For FEGLI Life Insurance?
Many Federal Employees just like you have been asking this same
question since FEGLI started in 1954. Even the Comptroller General
of the United States wondered the same thing and reported to
Congress as far back as April 7, 1986 that private sector insurance
programs typically provide greater coverage at lower costs to
employees than the Federal program does. The Government Accounting
Office also reported in April of 1986 that the FEGLI program is
inferior to many private sector policies*.
What Can You Do?
First, you must understand what your FEGLI coverage is, and then
the solution is easy. Your FEGLI coverage is increasing term life
insurance. That means the premiums go up as you get older! Option B
coverage just compounds the problem by throwing more money away on
the same increasing term insurance! Our premiums are guaranteed not
to increase for 20-30 years, depending on issue age and our policy
goes with you even if you move to the private sector.
